No home for Rambus at Transmeta

Now, not soon, probably not ever

Published Thursday 20th January 2000 09:30 GMT

Right. Where did that horse go? The Register cornered a contented-looking Taiwanese contingent at yesterday’s Transmeta party, but they were unable to explain the clip-cloppetting we all heard. But we rapidly agreed that this was the sound of the (now Six) Dramurai trotting into the distance.

For Transmeta confirmed that Rambus was off the agenda, as far as Crusoe is concerned, not just now – but probably for good. The Crusoe North Bridge is ready for SDRAM and DDRAM, and the word from official Transmeta management is that DDRAM "has a great future".

The company made its memory decision a year ago, it said, but wasn’t about to re-evaluate it anytime soon. So as the heavens were opening on Saratoga, which will probably go down as the rainiest launch in the Valley for some time (hacks were obliged to dodge between the mail auditorium and the demo rooms with only Crusoe umbrellas for protection) they were really dumping on Rambus. Hey Intel - you build them up, then you knock them down. Just like an English tabloid, huh? ®
