Why does Via want Centaur technology?

Taiwanese chipset manufacturer Via may have bitten off more than it can chew with the acquisition of IDT's Centaur microprocessor business. The cores of Cyrix processors and the WinChip line are very different and that raises questions about staff consolidation. However, and possibly this is more likely, owning the WinChip x.86 technology will give Via an extra bulwark in its up-and-coming legal battle with Intel.
