775-pin Prescott insides exposed on web
Not a pretty sight
Top marks to Virtual Zone for getting their mitts of one of Intel's 775-pin 'Prescott' Pentium 4 processors. The site claims to have had it for a while but now the time has come to lift the lid on the new chip - literally.
It's a bit Russian dolls, really. Lift one blank, featureless square to reveal... another, smaller blank, featureless square. Bland though it is, there's the Prescott die in all its... er... glory.
The die measures approximately 10.5mm-sqaured, much as expected, says Virtual Zone. Within it lie 125 million transistors, fabbed at 90nm, many of them making up Prescott's 1MB of L2 cache.
Pity you can't see whether there's 64-bit stuff in there too. It's hard to believe the chip needs 755 pins - count 'em - otherwise. ®
