Firstnet has finally confirmed that it has taken over Liberty Broadband - the fixed wireless broadband outfit formerly known as Tele2.

The announcement was made on Friday afternoon. Financial details were not released. However, the buy-out means that service to Liberty Broadband's 3,000 punters will continue.

In a statement the Leeds-based ISP said its strategy is roll-out broadband to areas currently not served by ADSL or cable. It also said it is now "actively seeking partners and other ISPs to deploy Wireless DSL in their own catchment areas".

However, no one was available to comment on this strategy - or a host of other unanswered questions - at the time of writing.

Last week - in the absence of any information from Firstnet - the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) confirmed that it was in the process of issuing the necessary licences to allow Firstnet to operate a fixed wireless broadband service. ®
