Sun Microsystems has fired a fresh salvo at the Wintel camp in the ongoing benchmarketing wars with the release of performance figures for its four-way Sun Fire V480 server.

Using its own ECperf benchmark, three Sun Fire(TM) V480 servers with 900 MHz UltraSPARC III processors running the Oracle9I Application Server Release 2 achieved 36,122 Benchmark Business Operations (BBops)/min@Std in a recent test. That equates to a price performance of $12/BBops/min@Std which, according to Sun, represents a 38 per cent increase in performance over all earlier results.

ECperf, a trademark of Sun Microsystems, is an industry standard benchmark designed to measure the performance of the Java(TM) 2, Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE). The benchmark focuses on performance at the application tier, modelling the handling of complex workloads (customer orders, inventory, manufacturing, and supply chain management) typically found in a large manufacturing business.
