Vizzavi - the Internet/cellphone portal backed by Vodafone and Vivendi - is refusing to accept new punters for its unmetered fixed line ISP service.

Anyone trying to sign up to the £12.99 a month service gets the following message: "Sorry, Vizzavi is no longer accepting new ISP registrations. Thank you for your interest in Vizzavi's ISP service."

No one at Vizzavi was available at the time of writing to comment on the decision.

However, in a statement the outfit said: "As Vizzavi moves forward, its business focus will be to provide information, entertainment and services through mobile devices so will be discontinuing its fixed line ISP service.

"New customers will not be recruited into the ISP and the service remains available to existing customers to whom Vizzavi will continue to maintain a high level of customer care," it said.

However, the use of the phrase "will be discontinuing its fixed line ISP service" suggests that Vizzavi could also be lookig to scrap the service altogether sometime in the future.

In January Vizzavi axed 100 jobs in Europe and announce that it would revise its business model to help it break even by the end of 2003. ®
