Palm preps ‘m300’ PDA

Mid-way between m100 and m500, apparently

Palm is working on a mid-range PDA between its m10x and new m50x families, The Register has learned.

Industry sources who've been briefed by Palm on its plans say that the device is positioned up from the current m105. They also say it will sport the same connection interface used by the old V and Vx PDAs. That seems odd to us, since Palm seems to be keen to standardise on the so-called Universal Connector sported by the m500 and m505.

However, there are still rather a lot of peripherals out there that support the old V/Vx interface, and Palm may have decided to continue to use the older connector to ensure V/Vx owners with peripherals have an upgrade path that doesn't involve chucking out all that kit.

It's also possible that the machine will have a Universal Connector by the time it ships.

Little else is known about the device, which it's tempting to call the m300, though there's no evidence that that's what Palm will call it.

It's hard to see what space the PDA really fills - there's certainly not much of gap between the m105 and the m500. One possibility is that the new machine is the successor to the wireless-enable Palm VIIx. Palm is known to be working on an update to that machine. ®
