Join The Reg Cancer Busting Team

Buddy can you spare a cycle, or two?

Published Wednesday 4th April 2001 13:51 GMT

Cancerbusters!

A couple of weeks ago we issued you all an invitation to join The Reg Seti@Home team. Almost overnight the crew grew to one of the biggest Seti rings on the Internet with more than 800 members.

Now several readers have asked us to set up a team also for the Intel/Oxford P2P cancer busting project. How could we refuse?

Download the software here Then join us
at http://members.ud.com/services/teams/. Apparently, the software works only rights on a Wintel platform (boo hiss!). We can't see any particular reason why Intel would deliberately disown Linux, so we guess support for this OS will be coming later. And considering Intel is doing this for philanthropic reasons, it would be nice to see the software embracing, say, Solaris and the MacOS RSN.

Vulture Central II has 64 members already donating their spare computing cycles to help, in the first instance, leukaemia research. We'll be making regular visits to update you all with stats and suchlike.

In the meantime we'll be investigating what exactly happens to the research. We're fairly certain that it won't simply line the pockets of fat cat pharmaceuticals companies. But assumptions are always dangerous - we'll seek a definitive answer as soon as possible.

Finally, we thank Dave Oliver, stalwart Reg reader and forum contributor, for setting up Vulture Central II. ®
