50 more than last year

More than 300 dotcoms have gone titsup.com since January 2000, with half flopping in the last three months.

February 2001 saw 52 dotcoms depart cyberspace - ten of these targeted businesses, while the rest were aimed at consumers or at a mixed bag of surfers.

The shutdowns were valued at more than $1.5 billion in investment, and brought the total number of closures since January last year to 327, according to US outfit Webmergers. Almost half of February's casualties were based in California.

Figures were down slightly on the previous two months -54 Internet companies closed down in both January and December

In February 2000 just two dotcoms shut down.

Companies spent just under $6 billion on buying 130 dotcoms in February 2001, and most of these were Net infrastructure outfits. A comparison to the previous February's figures was not available, but this year's figure was no doubt way down as the dotcom jitters continue among investors.

In a report published this month, US market research firm ActivMedia Research found half of surviving B2Cs and a third of B2B sites were making a profit. A quarter of ISPs and online content companies were also surprisingly in the black. ®
