Apple cuts cost of Cube – again

Got to get rid of 'em somehow...

Thousands of unsold Power Mac Cubes will be used to repair dwindling polar ice caps in a bid to reverse the effects of global warming and help clear out Apple's warehouses.

Well, maybe not, but the Mac maker has again cut Cube prices in another desperate bid to stimulate demand for the stylish but little-loved computer.

The latest cut brings the mid-range 500MHz, 30GB HDD, 128MB RAM Cube down to $1999, a cut of $300 and the top-end 500MHz, 40GB HDD, 256MB RAM version down to $2399, from $2699.

The low-end, 450MHz model stays at $1499, the price Apple set early January when it converted its original $300 cashback offer into a real price cut.

In the UK, the mid-range machine is currently priced at £1399. The 450MHz Cube costs £999. Again, the prices follow cuts previously made only through money-back offers.

The latest cuts come as Apple attempts to rid itself of unsold Cubes, having done the same for iMacs and other machines. So far the company has sold only a third as many Cubes as it originally expected - in the words of CEO Steve Jobs: "The disappointment to us was the market wasn't as big as we thought." ®
