Nvidia takes market lead from ATI

Nvidia's run of record financials continued yesterday when it reported its third quarter results for fiscal 2001.

For the three months to 29 October, the 3D graphics chip company saw net income hit $28.1 million on revenues of $198.2 million, up 165 per cent and 104 per cent, respectively. For the same period last year, the company recorded net income of $10.6 million and revenues of $97 million.

Before one-offs, Nvidia made a profit of $36.6 million, up from the $15.1 million it recorded in Q3 2000.

Its net earnings of 35 cents a share just beat Wall Street expectations - First Call's average put anticipated earnings at 32 cents a share.

Nvidia sited increased sales to PC OEMs as the chief driver behind its increased turnover. According to market researcher Mercury Research, Nvidia graphics chips were shipped in 48 per cent of all desktop PCs shipped in the third quarter of calendar 2000. Long-time rival ATI saw its desktop marketshare fall to 34 per cent. This time last year, Nvidia and ATI held 20 per cent and 39 per cent of the market, respectively.

Of course, the desktop business is only part of the story, and ATI continues to dominate the notebook arena, with a share of 57 per cent in calendar Q3, up from 20 per cent for the same period last year. ®
