iomart sets sail for broadband

and a yo-ho-ho and a bottle of scotch

Glasgow based telco and Net services company, iomart Group plc, has won the right to install its own broadband DSL infrastructure in BT's local exchanges as part of Local Loop Unbundling (LLU), it announced today.

The e-outfit - which is behind the ISP Madasafish, will focus initially on the Scottish market - will begin installing its kit in BT exchanges in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee early next year.

It claims this is just the first phase in a wider UK programme.

In a statement Angus MacSween, iomart CEO, said: "As a licensed telco with no legacy to protect, we can move swiftly to offer our customers the full potential from this new broadband technology."

Following recent departures from LLU biding process by RSL COM and WorldCom, it will, no doubt, be heartening to know that at least some telcos are proceeding with the provision of broadband services. ®
