Intel recalls 1.13GHz Pentium III

So it's not fastest x86 chip in the world

Chip giant Intel has confirmed that there are problems with the 1.13GHz Pentium III, as first reported on Tom's Hardware Page, and then on Hard OCP. It is now recalling the part, which won't be available for quite some while.

Tom Pabst gives the background to the problem, which he first encountered, here.

According to Kyle Bennett, Web master of Hard OCP, Intel had tested its 1.13GHz processor over the weekend after both Hard OCP and Tom's Hardware reported problems with Sysmark 2000 and Linux kernel compilation.

Bennett reports George Alfs, a PR representative at Intel, as saying the firm was able to reproduce the problems in house, and had "found marginalities" in the processor.

It will refund or replace any of the hen's teeth that have already been shipped.

Further, Intel will work with its OEMs to fix any of these problems. Rather significantly, the Dell 1.13GHz system has disappeared off its pages. Bennett reports Alfs as saying that customers who want a refund will get one.

You can find the Hard OCP piece here.

The confirmation is another blow to Intel and means that, for the time being, AMD holds the top dog position on having the fastest x86 based microprocessor in the known universe.

It's also a PR own goal by Intel, given that AMD shipped its 1.1GHz Athlon in quantity today. ®
