HP driver saga: Get your own back

HP doesn't support 80 min CDRs - but we know a man who does

The Great Stan of Printers has decreed that its CD writers will not support 80-minute CDs. Lucky then, that the HP-8100i and HP-8110i are not manufactured by Hewlett-Packard at all, but come from Sony and are all but identical to its CRX100E product.

So identical, in fact, that when reader Mark Tannert found out that Sony had released a firmware update for official support for writing 80min CDs, he felt brave enough to download new firmware from the Sony Web site and use it to update the flash in his HP drive. Now Win2K reports the drive as a Sony CRX100E and it writes 80min CDs just fine.

So that's how you get HP products to work properly under Win2K - use someone else's drivers. ®
