HP prompts staff to take unpaid summer holidays

Asked to 'rally on behalf of HP'

Hewlett Packard is encouraging its staff in the UK to take more days off this summer.

But this is not part of some perk cooked up for the workforce. The eight days of holiday will be unpaid, and will be part of a package where staff take less salary "to rally on behalf of HP" in an effort to trim costs.

The ten per cent wage cut kicked in this month, and will continue until the end of October.

All 3,700 staff in the UK have been asked to consider the pay chop, and have until Friday to agree.

HP blamed the "increasingly gruelling business environment that could last for some time".

The UK cut-backs are part of a worldwide scheme put in place by HP - over the past couple of weeks it has also asked staff in the US and Asia to consider similar moves.

Around 23,000 of its total staff have so far agreed to take the company up on its offer, according to HP.

The vendor has around 90,000 staff worldwide. ®
