Cheapo supermarket Aldi sells PCs
£699 1GHz PIII with DVD, CD-RW, no monitor
Super cheapo supermarket chain Aldi started flogging PCs this morning, but expects to be sold out by the end of the day.
The £699.99 Medion machine it's selling is a 1Ghz PIII with a HP Nero 5 CD-RW and a Liteon DVD. It doesn't come with a monitor but the company is offering a Medion 17 inch display for £99.99. And 17 inches is the actual viewing size, and not the CRT size - well done Aldi for following the Advertising Standards Authority recent ruling on monitor advertising.
Aldi has 250 shops in the UK and each branch has got just six machines, according to the store helpline.
For anyone who's bought a tin of Aldi tomatoes, and discovered loads of stalks in it, the quality brand names used in the PC might be surprising. The machine has a 40GB Seagate hard drive, 128 MB of Siemens S-DRAM, a Nvidia GeForce 2GTS 32MB graphics card.
Aldi also has a Medion scanner for £29.99, a HP 840 C printer for £69.99, and HP Photosmart 215 digital camera for £179.99. ®
