Nokia has upgraded its 7250 phone with an XHTML browser and enhanced digicam features, and is calling the new model the 7250i.

XHTML is parts of the WAP 2.0 spec., but Nokia is offering it on top of the phone's WAP 1.2.1 system. It provides a richer browsing experience more akin to PC-based Web surfing than WAP thanks to JPEG. The phone features a new icon view of the menu system's options.

Nokia has also increase the phone's memory to 4MB from the 7250's 3.5MB.

The new model improves on the older version's digicam by adding extra functions, including zoom, contrast adjustment, slideshow, and a night mode for low-light conditions. An image editor enables you to add text, frames and clip-art images. The handset also offers what Nokia calls "Portrait image caller ID" - which mean means you have the option of seeing a pre-set picture of the person who's calling you.

Like the earlier release, the 7250i features tri-band GSM support (900, 1800 and 1900MHz), a built-in stereo FM radio, multimedia messaging support, a 128x128 4096-colour screen, GPRS and HSCSD support, SyncML, Java support, speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones and so on.

The 7250i comes in new "seasonal" colour schemes, delivered by plug-on covers, and is shipping now in Europe and Asia. Pricing has yet to be announced. ®
