BT.com is a FTSE 100 web laggard – official

Our survey says...

Published Friday 15th August 2003 10:54 GMT

BT's web site is one of the worst-performing among the UK's top one hundred companies, according to a report due to be published on Monday.

SiteMorse carried out tests assessing the number of errors, speed and accessibility of corporate sites belonging to the all companies in the FTSE 100.

BT - which was ranked 94 overall - came bottom of the class along with the likes of Marks & Spencer, Kingfisher and Boots.

Top of the league table and boasting the best site overall was Bunzl followed by Amersham. The fastest site tested was Next, with an average page response time of 0.085 seconds.

The site with the slowest response time again was Scottish Power, where the average page response time more than 57 seconds per page.

SiteMorse's Lawrence Shaw told The Register: "The top sites are very good and error-free, but there are some big-name losers such as BT. There needs to be more quality control."

A spokesman for BT seemed surprised at the performance of BT.com. He told us: "BT has won lots of awards for its web site. This survey flies in the face of previous evidence that our web site is top of the class." ®
