IT courses to be compulsory in China
Education director speaks out
China is to make IT a compulsory school subject for children as young as five.
Director of the department of basic education Li Lianning said that by 2005 IT would be mandatory course in all secondary schools, and in primary schools located in cities and other developed areas.
Lianning was speaking at the fourth e-9 ministerial review meeting on education for all in Beijing, the Times of India reports.
Meanwhile, plans are afoot to step up Internet access in schools and to integrate the Net with other subjects.
By 2010, almost 90 per cent of China's primary and secondary schools are expected to have access to the Net - and the other ten per cent will have access to multi-media teaching facilities.
At the end of last year, 70,000 schools in the country were offering IT courses. ®
