World's first Bavarian cyber beer garden opens

Compaq gets trolleyed

Published Tuesday 31st July 2001 17:01 GMT

The Germans have come up with what they claim is the world's first Bavarian cyber beer garden.

Starting today, regulars of the Waldwirtschaft Grosshesselohe pub in Munich will be able to log on for free while downing their pints in the open air.

Two Internet-connected Compaq Armada E500 notebooks will be fixed to a trolley, which can be tugged around the beer garden to the various bratwurst-laden tables.

The project is a two-month experiment run between the pub - which regularly hosts traditional German drinking fests complete with leiderhosen-clad staff - Radio Relax fm and Enterasys Networks (Cabletron's enterprise networking subsidiary).

And in the interests of health and safety, the notebooks will be wirelessly hooked up to the Net. ®
