AltaVista mystery ends today

ISP will prove service exists

Updated AltaVista is to issue a statement later today confirming it has been rolling out its unmetered service since June 30 and that it has, indeed, signed up tens of thousands of users.

Andy Mitchell, MD of AltaVista in the UK and Ireland and the only person authorised to speak about his company, is back at his desk today.

According to a spokeswoman, the statement will "set the record straight" and clear up all the uncertainty about whether or not the service is operational.

We can't wait.

Update

The Register has received no communication from AltaVista despite assurances that the ISP would issue a statement this afternoon regarding its ISP in the UK.

It's understood that lawyers in the US are still working on the statement.

Andy Mitchell, MD of AltaVista in the UK and Ireland, was also unavailable for comment despite a promise he would be available for interview today. ®
