Lord Currie crowned Ofcom king

Who He?

Lord Currie, the dean of the Sir John Cass Business School of the City of London, is to be the first chairman of Ofcom, the new media/telecoms regulator, the FT says.

So who the hell is he? Well... Lord Currie lives in Islington, which makes him clearly a New Labour insider - with this appointment how could he not be? Currie is also one of the Great and Good, previously holding positions at OfGem, the Bank of England, and the International Monetary Fund.

His new job pays £130K a year and it's part-time. He will advise the government on the appointment of a chief executive and the board for Ofcom.

You want to get your job application early, or simply complain about BT? You can find his email addy here.

Ofcom replaces five regulatory authorities, including the much-derided Oftel, spanning media, radio and telecom.

Before his canonisation in 1996, Lord Currie was known as David. Now he is Professor David Currie, Lord Currie of Marylebone. ®
