AMD to unveil Opteron 148, 248, 848 next week?

Faster clocks, faster SDRAM support

AMD will add 148, 248 and 848 varieties to its Opteron server and workstation processor family next week, following the price cuts the chip maker made to all three lines at the end of October.

The release is expected to take the one-way 1xx, two-way 2xx and four- to eight-way 8xx series to 2.2GHz, according to channel sources cited by Xbit Labs.

They also claim the chips' on-board memory controllers will support 400MHz DDR SDRAM, bringing them into line with the Athlon 64 family. Current Opterons support only PC2700 DIMMs. The new Opterons will continue to require registered DIMMs.

We have yet to see any official pricing for the three new chips, but we've seen the figures $3199, $794 and $669 bandied about. We've heard it suggested that the price of the Athlon 64 FX-51 will fall at that time, paving the way for the upcoming 2.4GHz FX-53 at the 51's current price, $733.

In addition to the FX-53, AMD is also expected to launch the Athlon 3400+ in the coming weeks. Beyond that, the Opteron 250 is anticipated to arrive early next year. ®
