AMD to cut Athlon XP prices Monday

Chinese whispers

Update AMD will cut its Athlon XP prices on 27 October, a Chinese web site has claimed. The reductions will come to the 2700+, 2800+, 3000+ and 3200+, it reports.

The claim has since been confirmed by our UK sources.

The report gives no details as to how much AMD will lower prices, but a reduction to follow the Pentium 4 price cuts expected next Sunday wouldn't surprise anyone. And the anticipated launch of the Athlon 64 3400+ will put pressure on the Athlon XP line, also suggesting a price cut is in the offing.

The Athlon 64 3200+ is currently priced at $417, which the Athlon XP 3200+ costs $464. Come Monday and the 3.2GHz Pentium 4 will cost $417 too, making the XP less attractive.

The P4 price cut will make room for 'Prescott' at $637, the current price of the 3.2GHz P4. The Chinese site, Gzeasy, reckons that the Athlon 64 3400+ is likely to come in at that same price point, $637. ®
