Samsung Q2 semicon sales up 13.8 per cent

LCDs do particularly well

Samsung's semiconductor operation, the Device Solution Network (DSN), saw sales grow 13.8 per cent year-on-year during the company's second quarter, it reported today.

DSN yielded revenues totaling KRW3.76 trillion ($3.2 billion) for the period, up from the KRW3.24 trillion ($2.7 billion) it reported this time last year.

It wasn't all good news. During Q2 2002, DSN achieved an operating income of KRW1.07 trillion ($904.6 million). This time round, Samsung said DSN's net income was KRW570 billion ($481.9 million). Samsung did not provide directly comparable figures.

DSN combines Samsung's DRAM and other chips, and LCD operations. It accounted for 38 per cent of the company's total quarterly sales. Its operating margins were 15 per cent. During Q2 2003, DSN sold KRW1.83 trillion ($1.6 billion) worth of memory chips and KRW430 billion ($363.5 million) of non-DRAM parts. It sold KRW1.09 trillion ($921.5 billion) worth of LCDs - a year-on-year increase of 42 per cent.

Samsung as a whole saw operating income reach $1.16 trillion ($980.7 million). After one-off items, that figure falls to $1.13 trillion ($955.4 million). Revenue for the quarter totaled KRW9.84 trillion ($8.3 billion), up 2.5 per cent sequentially but down fractionally over one per cent on the KRW9.94 trillion ($8.4 billion) worth of sales it reported this time last year. ®
