Infineon runs to EC over Hynix subsidies

No investigation yet

Infineon has filed a complaint with the European Commission over alleged subsidies made by the Korean government to Korean DRAM makers.

"We have filed with the EU Commission a complaint against undue subsidies granted by the Korean government, in reaction to market-distorting practices by Korean competitors... most notably Hynix," a spokeswoman told AFX newswire.

Next step, the European Commission must now decide whether or not to run an investigation. But how could it turn down this opportunity, especially when the FCC is summoning every DRAM maker of note, in a price-fixing probe. Infineon wants the EC to impose anti-dumping tariffs. That would make prices rise further than any alleged industry collusion.

Last month, Michael Dell complained that DRAM makers were operating in a cartel-like fashion, after prices rose for a quarter or so. Prices are on the move upwards again. But it's a funny kind of cartel when the participants all lose money. ®
