Intel's Mobile Roadmap

More Mobile P4s and P4-based Mobile Celerons emerge

Updated Intel's mobile Pentium 4s, based on its 0.13 micron Northwood die0-shrink and now dubbed the Pentium 4-M, are now set to ship in March next year, when they will completely replace the Tualatin PIII-M in the Performance mobile categories.

Tulatin won't vanish - it will continue to be rebranded as Celeron right through the year. But the end is in sight. In Q4, Intel will ship a 1.5GHz Mobile Celeron based on Northwood, which will start pushing Tualatin out of the market.

Tualatin will also hang on in the more mainstream 'Balanced' mobile market (what Intel used to call the 'Thin and Light' sector), where we're not likely to see any P4-M parts before 2003 - when, no doubt, Banias will come in and replace Tualatin.

Northwood's debut will be accompanied by the i845MP and i845MZ chipsets, mobile versions of the PC133-based Brookdale. We're not sure what the difference is, but we'd suggest the MZ has an integrated graphics core.

Naturally, price movements will come too. On 20 January, for example:
900, 933MHz PIII-M - $107, -20.1%
850, 866MHz PIII-M - $91, -15%
800MHz PIII-M - $75, -32.1%
