Athlon XP results out

Performance rocks. Marketing sucks

HWRoundup Reports from the hardwarwe sites on AMD's Athlon XP processors mostly agree that its performance is great, while its marketing definitely needs work.

AnandTech places the Athlon XP 1800+ (1.53GHz) processor in the top spot, edging out even the Pentium 4 2GHz in many tests, including Internet content creation performance and office productivity performance, as well as some 3D tests. At the same time, it punishes AMD for its marketing affairs, saying that it "is reaching deep into their bag of mistakes from the past and is bringing back the dreaded performance rating nomenclature."

The Tech Report offers a huge and in-depth benchmark, comparing a vast array of Intel and AMD chips against each other. At the end, it concludes that AMD "has easily recaptured the performance lead from Intel." It is also one of the few sites not to take Chimpzilla to task over its model numbering decisions.

Elsewhere, OcPrices has some good benchmarking on the product, but blames the Swedish postal service for its inability to compare it to Intel benchmarks. It concludes that the chips are a significant improvement on its predecessors like the Athlon Thunderbird and Athlon K7.

Tom's Hardware Guide has its usual lengthy series of benchmarks, eventually crowning the Athlon XP as speed king in these tests, although the writer does mention that he is not satisfied with the results and has requested more tests from the lab.

Van's Hardware has a somewhat limited test, advising its readers to come back soon for more conclusive results and conclusions, while Source Magazine has a more substantial test on its site.

AMDZone also has its review on the wires. ®
