AMD Athlon XP speeds, pricing seep onto Web

Worried 'you know who' may find out...

Updated Athlon XPs are beginning to emerge on the Web and the world's PC markets ahead of the official launch next Tuesday (9 October).

Web site OC Workbench has piccies of the Athlon XP 1500+ (ie. 1.33GHz) having spotted the part on sale in Taipei for NT$4800 ($135).

And Japanese Web site PC Watch has a snap of the Athlon XP 1500+ clearly listed on an unnamed store's price board (it's down as the Thunderbird XP, for some reason) for a mere ¥18,800 ($155), which shows the mark-up on boxed processors - the OEM price we had passed to us last week put the chip at $115.

Meanwhile, UK PC maker Time has machines based on the Athlon XP 1500+, 1700+ (ie. 1.46GHz) and 1800+ (ie. 1.53GHz) listed on its site for £1069, £1129 and £1199, respectively. There's fortunately no reference to AMD's naff 'QuantiSpeed Technology' marketing slogan, intended to confuse punters trying to figure out what the XP's clock speed really is.

We also hear that Athlon XPs have cropped up on Pricewatch. For example, the 1800+ is being offered with mobos from Epox, Asustek and Abit for $349, $359, and $388, respectively. There are plenty of 1600+ (ie. 1.40GHz) offerings listed too.

We can easily imagine Chimpzilla hopping around like Donkey Kong Jr. trying to quosh such premature appearances, lest its arch-rival, Intel, figure out what it's up to and pull a surprise launch or round of price cuts on Monday 8 October to spoil the Athlon XP launch the day after. ®
