Intel to ship 2GHz Xeon launch by 26 August

Big server chip price cuts coming too

Intel will launch a 2.0GHz Xeon server processor on or before 26 August - the date one which the chip giant has pencilled in price cuts of up to 38 per cent for its other server chips.

The 2GHz Xeon - codename Foster and based on the Pentium 4 core - will ship for $615, according to pricing data leaked to Web site Xbit Labs. On the 28 October, when Intel will cut desktop processor prices a second time, after hacking prices on 26 August, the 2GHz Xeon will come down to $444, a fall of 28 per cent.

On the 26 August, the 1.7, 1.5 and 1.4GHz Xeons will fall to $256, $192 and $192, down 37 per cent, 38 per cent and 28 per cent, respectively. These prices will be unchanged on 28 October.

The recently released Tualatin-based 1.13 and 1.26GHz Pentium III server chips will fall to $278 and $337, down 9.7 per cent and 8.7 per cent, respectively. The 866MHz Pentium III Xeon will fall to $154, down 5.5 per cent.

On 28 October, the two Tualatins' prices will be cut to $235 and $300, down 16 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively. The 1GHz and 933MHz Pentium IIIs will fall to $181 and $154, down 6.2 per cent and 5.5 per cent, respectively. ®
