Intel to unveil 0.13 micron Mobile Pentium III next week

Intel will demo its 0.13 micron Mobile Pentium III, codenamed Tualatin, next week, the company announced today.

It's not an official launch, you understand - that comes "in the third quarter" - simply the technology's first public outing. We're not entirely sure what the difference between showing off your technology and showing off your technology officially is, but then that's Intel for you.

The non-launch will take place at the TechX trade show in New York on 26 June.

Intel isn't saying much about what the CPU will do or contain - the official statement on the unofficial launch is that the chip features a "0.13 micron process" - never! - "will deliver speeds in excess of 1GHz" and offers "new power management technologies".

Today's statement refers to the chip as the "mobile Pentium III processor-M", which sounds a tad garbled to us. Our money's on Pentium III-M, to distinguish it from the previous generation of Mobile Pentium III parts.

And, as we've reported before, it's shipping in volume already. "Leading PC makers are now preparing new systems based on this processor," says the company.

Intel's official launch is expected to take place on 30 July. ®
