Son of Intel 815E arrives

Pundit's favourite chipset goes walkabout

Intel's popular (aka working) 815E chipset has spawned a mobile offspring, the 815EM, designed for Pentium III notebooks.

The new chipset integrates graphics functionality and can also support external AGP 4x or AGP 2x graphic controllers. Support for Chipzilla's SpeedStep power management is also included.

The 815EM uses the same hub architecture of its big brother, and uses a new I/O Controller Hub (ICH2-M) claimed to offer improved performance as well as an additional USB port, includes Local Area Network connectivity, dual Ultra ATA/100 controllers and support for Dolby Digital full surround sound - ideal for really annoying people on the train.

The chip also has hardware-assisted motion compensation to improve DVD video quality and a digital video-out port to connect mobile PCs directly to televisions or flat panel displays.

In 1,000-unit quantities, the Intel 815EM chipset is priced at $47.50. ®
