How cuddly are Carly and Curly, asks ‘HP’

Phone-a-friend

The continuing strife over the Sircam merger between HP and Compaq could be troubling the venerable Silicon Valley giant.

A London-based Register reader tells us he found himself being quizzed by a market research company on his consumer perceptions of a range of HP products. Then after twenty or so minutes, the researcher asked "have you heard of any industry mergers?", the cue for a host of questions about his perceptions of the troubled pairing between HP and Compaq.

We'd welcome any similar experiences UK-based readers may have had in the past week. This could be a lone caller with a very strange sense of humour, unlikely though this is. People have some very strange hobbies, and ringing up strangers with spoof market research polls could conceivably be one of them.

Or is HP, quite prudently, becoming concerned with the how the continuing uncertainty around the Sircam merger is playing with consumers?
