BT has hit its magic milestone of one million wholesale broadband connections, the monster telco confirmed today.

The target for summer 2003 was set back in February last year when BT had just 145,000 connections.

Marking today's achievement, BT has also announced that it is to reduce every trigger level by 50 registrations for exchanges that have yet to converted to ADSL.

BT boss Ben Verwaayen claims the success of the demand-led registration scheme has given BT the "confidence to reduce trigger levels and take on more of the commercial risk".

The move means that 69 exchanges will now automatically pass their threshold, putting them in line to be converted to broadband.

Of course, with this target under its belt, BT has now to ready itself for its next goal - five million broadband punters by 2006.

In April cablecos NTL and Telewest announced that they had one million broadband punters. ®
