AOL to outline broadband strategy today

And other stuff

AOL Time Warner is to provide an update on its AOL Internet division today. In particular, it's expected to outline its strategy for broadband.

According to the US wires, one of the key points could be the decision to increase efforts to flog its content to those who already have broadband supplied by another provider.

The "bring your own access" model - which costs punters $14.95 a month for AOL content, email etc. on top of the cost of their broadband connection - is viewed as an area of potential growth.

Dow Jones reports that AOL already has around 3.7 million punters using this model to gain access to AOL content from another provider.

In the UK, splitting content from access is something being pursued by BT with its no frills BT Broadband service. People signing up to it can then choose which content and services provider they wish.

Of course, it differs slightly from the AOL approach as AOL is offering content to people with different access providers. In BT's case, it is providing access for people to then choose different content providers.

So, is the idea of splitting content from access something AOL UK intends to pursue? A spokesman for the outfit said they would consider this - but only when people demanded it. ®
