The battle to gain broadband customers took a new turn today after PlusNet introduced a new, cheaper ADSL product.

The new "Home Surf" ADSL service costs just £20.99 and is aimed at punters who use the Internet for web browsing, gaming and email.

However, it does not allow punters to engage in file sharing (or peer-2-peer) applications and only allows access to text-based groups on PlusNet’s Usenet service.

The service is £2 a month cheaper than PlusNet's standard single-user product and £9 a month cheaper than offerings from the likes of Freeserve and BTopenworld.

Today's announcement by PlusNet is the latest move by ISPs looking to get a head start in the grab for broadband market share.

Earlier this week Pipex said it would give new subscribers a DSL modem as part of a month-long promo. That's on top of an earlier pledge to pay set-up costs for some 40,000 new customers.

And today BTo said it would donate 800 DSL connections as part of its bid to drive demand. ®
