Vendor trio unveils Intel PIII 800MHz and 850MHz notebooks

Dell, Gateway and IBM limber up

A trio of vendors today announced which notebooks they planned to ship with Intel's latest mobile chips.

Intel has released three new flavours onto the market -two Pentium IIIs using at SpeedStep, at 800MHz and 850MHz, and a 700MHz mobile Celeron.

Regarding the mobile PIIIs, Dell is launching two notebook models - the Inspiron 4000 and 5000e. An Inspirin 4000 with 850MHz processor, 14.1 inch TFT screen, 64MB SDRAM, 6GB hard drive, 56k modem and Windows ME will set you back $2,588.

The higher end 5000e with 850MHz chip and 15 inch screen, 64MB SDRAM, 5GB hard drive, 56k modem, Windows ME and one year's AOL Internet access weighs in at $3,178.

Gateway is also launching two models using the new PIII mobiles, but will not be shipping with the mobile Celeron 700MHz. A Gateway Solo 5300 with 850MHz starts at $2,549, with 32MB SDRAM, 6GB hard drive, and Windows 98 OS. A Solo 9300 with the same chip, 15 inch screen, 64 SDRAM memory and 10GB hard drive is $3,428.

Meanwhile, IBM has launched two ThinkPad models that will use these speedy mobile PIIIs. The A21 and T21 models will be available from next month. Big Blue said prices will start at $1,799 for machines using the slower chip to $4,499 for A21 models, and $3,199 to $4,599 for T21 models. ®
