Intel cuts P4 pricing again

And 'secret' price cuts firm up

It's not even in the shops yet, but Chipzilla has made yet another price reduction on the forthcoming flagchip Pentium 4.

Figures leaked to hardware site OC Workbench reveal that the 1.4GHz P4 will now debut at $625, while its big brother 1.5GHz will set you back $795 in 1Ku quantities. Only a couple of weeks ago, Chipzilla was planning to flog the chips at $652 and $827 respectively.

Back in July, the 1.4GHz was priced at $895 and the now-discontinued 1.3GHz was tagged at $795. The demise of the 1.3GHz part, along with the earlier than expected move to 1.7GHz (Q1) and 2GHz (Q2) are strong pointers that P4 yields are now looking pretty healthy.

As predicted here, the P4 will come bundled with Rambus memory through Intel's RDRAM Credit Program, under which a subsidy of $70 per processor will be granted at launch, dropping to $60 in Q1 next year.

And the secret price cuts planned across the rest of the range for October 29 have also been firmed up (see Secret Intel price cuts revealed.)

The recalled and completely unavailable until Q2 next year 1.13GHz part drops from $990 to $637. What the Hell's the point of chopping the price of a non-existent processor?

Coming back to reality, the 1GHz PIII drops from $669 to $465, the 933MHz from $508 to $348 and both the 866 and 850MHz parts fall to $241. All other PIIIs will cost $193, except for the 650 and 667MHz flavours, which drop to $163. ®
