The race for the P4: Chipzilla shuffles top jobs

Nothing sorts trouble like a game of musical chairs

Top level shuffling at Intel, apparently aimed at solving the company's recent run of trouble with the P4, has seen three big names moving around like pieces on a chessboard.

Mike Splinter, the current senior VP of the technology and manufacturing group, will move up a notch and take the presidential spot. In his new position he will oversee the PIII's change to the new 0.13-micron geometry next year. He will also be responsible for the company's ramp up for the production of the P4.

The launch of the P4 has, as reported, suffered delays and should now ship next month. This, combined with the recall of the 1.13GHz PIII, and AMD's ability to capitalise on Intel's misfortune - it announced ten PC builders working with the 1.1GHz Athlon just after Intel recalled the PIII - must have prompted the reshuffling.

Meanwhile, Albert Yu will move from his position as co-general manager of the Intel architecture group, to head up the optoelectronics division. This move is at best sideways according to industry watchers who also suggest that this could tip the balance in favour of Paul Otellini to take over when CEO Craig Barrett steps down. Otellini has been given sole management of the architecture group.

Intel was talking up the addition of Yu to the optoelectronics division rather than focussing on the fact that he had not, in fact, been promoted. ®
