1.2 Gig Athlon, 800 Meg Duron launch this month

Christmas present from Chimpzilla

Published Saturday 14th October 2000 08:40 GMT

AMD confirmed today that a 1.2GHz Athlon would be in the stores in time for Christmas.

A spokesperson for AMD Europe told The Register that both the 1.2GHz Athlon and an 800MHz Duron would be formally announced later this month, giving Chimpzilla a clear lead in performance stakes over the crucial Christmas buying period. An announcement on DDR SDRAM would follow "not too far into the future", the spokesperson added.

AMD is currently riding high with a number of significant wins at PC makers who have historically been 100 per cent Intel, such as the UK's Tiny, Germany's Vobis and Micron in the US.

Problems with Intel's Tehama chipset, which have resulted in a slippage for Chipzilla's upcoming flagship Pentium 4, are also viewed with glee: "Things are going very well indeed," observed the AMD representative. ®
