White coats to examine digital divide

Brit Govt to investigate impact of technology on society

The British Government is to create a new research centre by Christmas to investigate the impact of new technology on society.

Michael Wills, the Minister for Learning and Technology, said the new centre would spearhead the Government's drive to end the digital divide.

Mr Wills said: "As we enter the 21st century a rigorous understanding of new technology will be crucial to anyone who wants to succeed in the wired or the wireless world.

"Research into new technology and digital communications will provide the Government with invaluable knowledge that will help to ensure future policies are able to address the many issues that new technology raises," he said.

Good grief. Without such a research centre in place it's no wonder the Government's so out of touch on these e-issues. ®
