AMD 1.1GHz Athlon a go-go

Orders being taken

Following on the sneak preview of the 1.1GHz Athlon AMD showed us in room 1026 of the San Jose Tower and Hilton last week, the firm has announced availability of the part plus a clutch of PC customer wins.

Compaq, Big Blue, HP, Gateway, Fujitsu Siemens, and a raft of others are introducing machines based on the part. There's one name missing from the list and that's Dell. Cough.

However, we wonder why AMD didn't just go ahead and introduce a 1.2GHz part and thus play its part in the now time-honoured game of chip leapfrog.

Intel introduced a 1.13GHz Pentium III earlier in the month, but that's only in limited quantities. So limited that one part seems to be doing the rounds of the UK magazines, for example.

Both Tom's Hardware, and more recently, Hard OCP have reported problems with the 1.13GHz parts they have.

Mind you, you can't buy the 1.13GHz off the shelf in Frys, so if there are big problems, it will be up to the Dells of this world to solve them before they get to the end user.

And talking of Frys. Last Thursday, we took a trip along to the big-and-boring store in Satan Clara, just a stone's throw (if you're good at chucking things) from Emission College Boulevard, and while they had a 1GHz Athlon proudly on show, we looked in vain for a flip-chip Penitent III at 1GHz. The highest Intel clock speed available seemed to be the 700MHz Pentium III.

AMD has bunged up a presentation about its 1.1GHz part which you can find here.

There are reviews of the 1.1GHz Athlon all over the shop and spotted at AMD Zone, Ace's Hardware and Anandtech so far. ®
