AMD fans currently a nightmare

Athlon and Duron powers

Here at The Register, we know AMD fans are a nightmare. If any story appears on our site which in any tiny way whatever suggests anything negative about the Great Satan of Taperecorders, our email box rapidly fills up with injured emissives telling us what a great company it is.

But this time we're not talking about AMD fans, but about AMD fans.

Because a major AMD distributor in North America has alerted us about problems OEMs, dealers and system integrators are having getting the right heatsink and fans for both the Athlon Power and Duron Power socket A microprocessors.

He says that Celeron and K6 cooling devices are not really the answer to the problem. "On the high end you can find some really fancy (and usually overkill) expensive solutions for the overclockers like the Golden Orb, etc. These however cost a lot of money.

"AMD has not yet been shipping boxed product packaged with the heatsink kit, so to use these CPUs one must go hunting a bit."

AMD itself tells him that authorised distributors are currently taking orders for Duron and Socket A Athlon (Thunderbird) boxed CPUs without necessarily having the right cooling devices.

But there is a list of approved heatsink manufacturers which you can find at the AMD site.

And if you're the other kind of AMD fan and want to raise some heat on this issue, or whirr around at high RPMs, why not drop a line to our Kieren McCarthy, the letters editor. ®
