Dell dithers over Win2K driver

Thousands stranded in NT4 wilderness

Thousands of Dell customers are still waiting for their Windows 2000 upgrade - four months after Microsoft launched the operating system.

The delays concern drivers needed for the Texas company's NT4 workstations. According to Dell, there have been "delays in a number of drivers" from certain third party vendors, which Dell chose not to name.

The company decided to wait to ship the Microsoft Win2K OS to customers until it could ship a CD complete with all the Dell drivers between 25 and 30 - at the same time.

Waiting for the various components in this CD and testing all the drivers on it meant Dell did not start shipping the upgrade for these systems until the start of June. It expects to have all the CDs in the EMEA region out in the next couple of weeks, James Griffiths, Dell UK and Ireland client product marketing manager said.

"It's not ideal," he admitted. "We don't want to keep users waiting, but we want to make sure that what we ship is high quality."

Griffiths said that around half the shipments have gone out so far to the EMEA region, and the CDs should be worth waiting for - it is promised to be as perfect "as anything can be".

"We expect to be in a position by the end of the month where everyone in EMEA who has registered for an upgrade will have it," he said. ®
