IPTV Week

IPTV Week logo

IPTV - television channels delivered over the internet rather than the airwaves - is in its infancy in the UK.

Amazon's Lovefilm has been streaming to the web and to gadgets from games consoles to tablets to TVs for some time, and now it's up against some stiff competition: from the US, Netflix is now up and running in the UK too.

But don't forget the lesser known names of video streaming: Acetrax and BlinkBox.

Then there's Apple's iTunes, considered more a content sales service, but with its movie rental sideline just as much an IPTV service as the others. Ditto YouTube, now it is expanding its collection of paid-for content from major broadcasters and film studios.

Those are the services - what about the hardware you watch them on? More and more set-top boxes and so-called "smart TVs" - aka "connected TVs" - are hitting shop shelves in the hope IPTV is the killer feature 3D wasn't.

This week, Reg Hardware will be taking a look at the IPTV services - the 'software' - and the hardware available to UK consumers. Check back here regularly - we'll be listing all our IPTV Week coverage below.
