Sydney police have swooped on a fraud ring that implanted skimmers into taxis to clone customers' credit cards.

Police on July 1 arrested four men involved in the ring including a 29 year-old taxi driver at Chullora, nabbed a fifth chap later that day, and raided a Sydney CBD unit where 800 credit cards, a laptop and cloning equipment were seized.

It is alleged the men made hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraudulent purchases by implanting the devices into taxi EFTPOS payment terminals.

Fraud and Cybercrime Squad acting commander detective John Watson asked taxi drivers to come forward and provide information if they were approached to install credit card skimmers.

"If you are a driver and you were approached by people asking you to use a skimming device, or you are aware of other taxi drivers using these devices, please do the right thing and contact Crime Stoppers," Detective Watson said.

Police operating under Strike Force Hereford 2 investigated the ring over several months before pouncing on what was described as one of many likely carder rings operating in the state.

Three men were granted conditional bail to appear in Burwood Local Court on July 14. A Greenacre man was released.

In August last year, NSW Police busted a Romanian carder ring which had used a 3D printer to produce skimmers subsequently installed across Sydney ATMs. ®
