Apple is now touting a cheaper iPod Touch with a better camera.

The iThing giant said the 16GB iPod Touch model will now come with a five-megapixel iSight camera as well as a price drop, which will see the entry-level Zune-killer fall from $229 to $199 (£159). The 32GB $249 (£199) and 64GB $299 (£249) models will remain unchanged.

The update means that all three of Apple's iPod Touch offerings will sport the 5Mp iSight camera, a 4in Retina screen and an Apple A5 CPU. Color choices include pink, yellow, blue, silver, gray and a (Product) Red model.

All three models run iOS 7. The company said the Touch line will be updated to iOS 8 this Fall.

The Touch serves as the flagship of an iPod line which was once among Apple's top products but has since been relegated to niche status. Last quarter, Apple reported selling 2.7 million iPods for $461m in revenue. By comparison, the company sold 43.7 million iPhones to bring $23bn revenues.

The cut to $199 marks the second time in recent weeks Apple has lowered the price floor on one of its product lines. The Tim Cook-run biz often opts to keep a set price on its devices, shifting older models down to the lower price points as new models are introduced.

Last week, the company tweaked the iMac line when it announced a new addition to the low-end with a $1,099 model. That 21.5in model will target the entry-level space, though the use of soldered components would make the new iMac a decidedly poor choice for those who would want to perform hardware upgrades. ®
