Google is working on a radical new redesign of the desktop version of its webmail service Gmail, it has been speculated.

This comes after screenshots surfaced detailing various features Google is allegedly testing out.

When quizzed about the gossip, Google declined to confirm or deny that a makeover was planned. A spokesperson told The Register: "We don’t comment on rumour or speculation I’m afraid."

According to Geek.com, which claims to have leaked screenshots of a possible Gmail redesign, the desktop version could soon have a similar feel to Google's mobile app.

"The wave of features we’ve been invited to take a look at shows an entirely different user interface, one that is clearly designed to function across a variety of screen sizes without losing functionality," the blog said.

Google experiments with changes to its webmail UI all the time. And there's no guarantee that this particular revamp will ever go into live production. But the trial points towards a cleaner, more Web2.0 design. ®
