Speaker bods Sonos chuck FREE TELLY* in with discount offer

*TV channels, not the display - come on now, be reasonable

Wi-Fi streaming speaker supplier Sonos is sweetening Playbar UK purchases with six months of Spotify and Sky Movies.

The Playbar is priced at £599 ($699 in the USA) and connects to an HDTV through an optical cable. It can be integrated with other Sonos speakers like the equally expensive Sub for bass oomph, and a pair of Play:3s or Play:1 speakers to provide a surround sound experience, as El Reg tested out.

There’s lots of competition. At the cheap end of the scale Amazon has a Vizio soundbar with wireless subwoofer and satellite speakers for $245. The equivalent set of boxes from Sonos would cost $1,796; more than seven times costlier.

What Sonos is doing in the UK is offering Playbar purchasers Spotify Premium free for six months and a TV box bundle with a 6-month Sky Movies pass - NOW TV. The canned marketing blurb says: “With the Sky Movies Pass you can enjoy over 800 movies whenever you want, and 30 new movies every month. Plus the NOW TV Box gives you catch-up TV from BBC iPlayer and 4OD.”

The special offer on Sonos.com runs until Wednesday 5 May, 2014, “while supplies last”. It’s not a way of selling associated very often with premium products. Still, if it sounds good … ®
