A Queensland man has been arrested, accused of hacking League of Legends and selling player data online.

According to Queensland Police the 21-year-old, identified by News Limited as Shane Duffy of Kingaroy, unlawfully accessed Riot's network, databases and files, and hijacked the company's Twitter account.

The police say they first executed a search warrant against Duffy in November 2013, in which they took possession of his laptop and a hard drive. The arrest follows a forensic analysis that turned up “items located within an encrypted container”.

While the Queensland plods don't provide any further information about the online attacks, the company suffered a breach in August 2013 that resulted in a system-wide password reset in North America. In a separate incident in October, someone hijacked the Twitter account of Riot CEO Marc Merrill to post images Merrill said were “old prototypes”.

According to the police, Duffy is “alleged to have established a website offering a paid service to search the company’s player database”. News says the player details would let other players cheat by DoSing their competitors. That story includes a spirited defence of Duffy by his mother, who says the police have the wrong man.

Duffy “has been charged with three counts of computer hacking and misuse, two counts of fraud (dishonestly apply property to own use), two counts of fraud (dishonestly obtain property from another) and one count each of fraud (dishonestly cause detriment and possessing equipment for purpose of committing/facilitating the commission of an offence,” the police statement says, and he will next appear in court on April 8. ®
